What to Expect During Your Fence Installation (Day-by-Day)

If you've never had a fence installed before, the process can feel like a mystery. We hear questions like "how long does it take?" and "do I need to be home?" all the time. Here's exactly what the process looks like when you work with a professional fence installation team.

Before Installation Day

After you accept our estimate, we'll take care of the permit (if required in your city) and call 811 to have underground utilities marked. This is a free service and it's required by Colorado law before any digging. We handle the scheduling — you don't need to call.

We'll also confirm your property lines. If there's any ambiguity about where your property ends, we may recommend a survey. It's always better to know exactly where the line is before posts go in the ground.

Day 1: Posts

This is the most critical day. We dig post holes to a minimum depth of 30–36 inches (below the frost line in Northern Colorado), set the posts in concrete, and make sure every single one is plumb and properly aligned. The posts are the foundation of your fence — if they're right, everything else falls into place.

We typically let the concrete set overnight before moving to the next phase.

Day 2: Rails and Boards

With the posts solid, we attach the horizontal rails and begin hanging boards. This is where your fence really starts to take shape. We work section by section, making sure every board is straight and every gap (if applicable) is consistent.

For most residential fences, the rails and boards go up in a single day. Larger properties or complex layouts may take two days.

Day 3: Gates, Hardware, and Details

Gates get special attention — they need to swing freely, latch securely, and hold up to daily use. We install heavy-duty hinges and latches built for cedar's weight. We also handle any detail work: trimming around obstacles, addressing grade changes, and making sure everything is clean and tight.

Final Walkthrough

Before we consider the job done, we walk the entire fence line with you. We check every section, every gate, and every detail. If anything isn't right, we fix it on the spot. Then we clean up — every scrap of wood, every piece of concrete, every bit of debris leaves with us. Your yard should look better than when we arrived.
